Honore’s Benfica books Portuguese final spot

National men’s volleyball middle-blocker Marc-Anthony Honore and three-time reigning champion SL Benfica booked a spot in the Portugal Men’s A-1 Division Championship final after sweeping their best-of-five semifinal series versus SC Espinho, yesterday.

SL Benfica registered a 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-22) triumph in front of their own home supporters in Lisbon to add to previous wins 3-0 (27-25, 25-22, 25-15) on Saturday, and 3-1 (25-12, 25-16, 19-25, 25-14) in the opener eight days ago.

In the final which will also comprised five matches if needed, SL Benfica will face regular-season table-topper Sporting CP which also swept Castelo da Maia 3-0 after a 25-23, 25-22, 25-16 Game Three win, yesterday.

Over in Sweden in the Elitserien Women’s League, former national women’s team captain, setter Renele Forde and Svedala moved into a three-way tie for fifth spot on the 12-team table after beating Gislaved 25-23, 5-25, 25-22, 25-20.

With the win, Svedala record improved to 11-15 and 36 points, the same as Gislaved while Linkopings (11-15) has 37 points.

Hyle/Halmstad lead the table with a 24-3 record and 74 points, one point ahead of Engelholm (25-2) while Orebro (23-3) is third with 68 followed by Lindesberg (18-8) for 51 points.

However, former St John’s University standout, Darlene Ramdin and her Generika-Ayala Lifesavers continued their early season struggles with a 19-25, 16-25, 25-21, 17-25 loss to second place Cocolife (4-2) in the Philippines Super League Women’s Grand Prix.

It was the fourth loss from as many matches for Generika-Ayal who will seek first win tomorrow (Tuesday) versus March 10 and cellar-placed Giga Hitters, 0-4 also.
