Zouks win thriller at the Oval
Their first clash in the 2015 Hero CPLT20 tournament ended in no-result and for over two hours fans sat at the Queen’s Park Oval wondering if the same fate would befall their second meeting but the rain Gods decided to be kind and allowed a reduced nine-over per side encounter, which saw the the Zouks take away a thrilling four-wicket win.
Needing 17 runs from the last over bowled by Red Steel captain Dwayne Bravo, the Zouks got home with the New Zealanders Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor getting the runs. When McCullum left, Taylor was left to get seven runs from two balls. He hit the penultimate ball for a massive six and then got the winning run of the final ball to send Darren Sammy wild in the dugout.
Jacques Kallis was brilliant for the Red Steel, scoring a rapid 38 in their total of 90 for four and then returning to claim 3/15 but it was not enough on the night. Johnson Charles stole his thunder with 41 of 23 balls including three sixes and three fours to leave his team on nine points with one match to play. The Red Steel stays at the bottom of the pile with five points from six matches and now needs to win their final four matches to ensure a place in the play-offs.
Earlier, being a groundsman on the night was tough job as the guys had to put the covers on and off three times and had to mop up three times as well. When the covers were peeled off for the final time the crowd reacted as if Dwayne Bravo had slammed a six, such was their plight at not seeing bat and ball. One fan even paid $550 to get into the Oval just to support the Red Steel.
Zouks won the toss and asked the home team to take first strike, always an advantage with the rain about. Kallis and Cameron Delport began well with Kallis giving the crowd glimpses of his greatness. He struck the ball with ferocious power. Zouks however kept breaking the momentum by taking wickets. Delport (9) was yorked by Fidel Edwards, William Perkins (0) and Javon Searles (6) perished to former Red Steel player Delorn Johnson and at 50 for three the visitors were in the game.
Kallis was there and the big crowd was begging for him to send balls their way. He tried but left via a good catch to Pietersen at deep mid off for 38. He faced just 19 balls hitting four fours and two sixes.
Towards the end of the innings the previously off colour Darren Bravo and Dwayne batted enterprisingly to close at 90 for four off nine overs. Darren was unbeaten on 19 off nine balls with two fours and a six, while Dwayne faced eight balls for his 14 with one hit to the fence. Leg-spinner Kerron Cottoy was the pick of the bowlers, taking 1/12 off his allotted two.
