Botha: All rounders give Red Steel strength
Experienced South African player Johan Botha believes a solid group of all rounders in the T&T Red Steel franchise can lead the team to a successful run in this year’s Caribbean Premier League T20 tournament, which bowls off today.
Botha, 33, one of T&T’s new signings for this year’s tournament, spoke to the media at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port-of-Spain, on Tuesday.
Botha said the strength of the Red Steel is the number of all rounders in the squad. “I think every team needs to get to the semifinal first, so that is our first target. I definitely think the strength of our team is all the all rounders we got. In the top seven batsmen we have four guys that can bowl so that helps a lot. We also have Kamran Akmal in there as a keeper. We have five all rounders at the top and that gives you a lot of options at the bottom end of the batting department.”
The South African, who is excited to play alongside world class players, also spoke about the other new signings on the team which includes Pakistani Kamran Akmal and South African Cameron Delport.
“Kamran has a lot of international experience. We look for him to be explosive at the top with the bat and be solid with the gloves. Cameron Delport is a bit of an unknown in our team. He is quite of an explosive left-hander at the top of the order.” Botha added that the Bravo brothers will give the middle order some firepower.
Botha says he is enjoying his time in the Caribbean and added that West Indians know how to flick the switch when it matters. “The people are all so friendly and helpful. The players know when to turn it on, they are fun off the field but once it’s game time they deliver and we saw that with Andre Russell with the Kolkata Knight Riders (Indian Premier League) this year. We have a couple of those players in our team like Kevon Cooper, while Dwayne (Bravo) is one of the best in the world, so we got a few similar players.”
