The National Commission for Self Help (NCSH) is pleading with people to pay more attention to  the land they choose to build houses on.
This point was raised by Surujdeo Mangaroo, the chairman of the NCSH, when he visited the collapsed house of Brian Ramlal, 30, of Radix Village, Mayaro on Sunday.
Mangaroo said people should start taking care of their properties and not allow their homes to reach the brink of collapse. He said he was saddened by Ramlal’s plight and was pleased to see Ramlal making some effort to rebuild his wooden house, which is on the side of a hill.
Ramlal said on Christmas Eve he was at the home of relatives with his wife and children when he got a call from a neighbour to say his house had collapsed. He said the house was supported by concrete blocks that slipped after heavy rains during that period.
Ramlal, who is a self-employed joiner, said his wife Nidia and their two infant children were now staying with relatives in Rio Claro, while he was still living in the collapsed structure so that he could continue to work and earn a living.
Mangaroo said the NCSH would be granting Ramlal $15,000 worth of building materials to reconstruct his house, but this time with a better foundation. He told Ramlal to salvage the appliances, furniture and roofing materials.
