India marks 71 years of Independence

Wednesday, August 15, 2018

Message from Bishwadip Dey,

Indian High Commissioner

It is with great honour I extend greetings to my fellow brothers and sisters as we celebrate the 71st Independence Day of India. After a prolonged struggle and immeasurable sacrifice, we achieved Independence from the colonial power, and freedom to shape our own destiny. The sacrifices made by our forefathers during the struggle are remembered by all of us. Peaceful movement led by Mahatma Gandhi is revered worldwide, earning him the title 'Apostle of Peace'.

Since Independence, India has worked hard to raise the levels of literacy, to reduce the gap between the haves and have-nots. We have celebrated unity in diversity and are proud to be the world's largest democracy. Our efforts are untiring and continuing. We are an agrarian economy but have also diversified into other sectors successfully. Today, we are the sixth largest economy in the world; we are in the forefront in the areas of science and technology, IT, space technology, pharmaceuticals etc. Our large middle-class population supports a major domestic consumption; our youth is educated and provides a major workforce.

Traditionally, India has warm and friendly relations with T&T, our close ties are based on socio-cultural relations. Our leadership has been working closely with the Government of T&T towards further strengthening of ties for the benefit of our two countries. Honourable prime ministers of T&T and India met recently in London during CHOGM and had wide ranging discussions. Most importantly, they spoke about the people-to-people contacts, the harmony between our two countries, and how to raise further our cooperation.

Keeping in line with our traditional closeness, visits of cultural troupes from India have received excellent applause from our Trini friends. The Manipuri Dance or Qawwali songs have held the audiences spellbound in multiple cities. We are grateful to receive high degree of co-operation from various ministries of T&T, which once again testifies to our warm and friendly relations. Our technical and economic cooperation programmes, our knowledge-based programmes are a mega hit with the youth of this country.

I take this opportunity to thank Guardian Media network, and through them, greet my fellow brothers and sisters on this happy occasion.
