Cops probe St James Infirmary brawl

Tuesday, October 2, 2018

Senior police officers from the Western Division have launched an investigation into a major brawl that broke out earlier tonight at the Accident and Emergency Department of the St James Infirmary.

Initial reports stated that at about 7.30 pm there was a confrontation among a group of people, including two patients and relatives. The confrontation, police said, then escalated into a fight involving more than five people, among them two women.

Police said they believe that the incident may have stemmed from a chopping incident earlier, but investigations are continuing.

The brawl was captured on video and shared on social media. In the two-minute 43 second video, security guards could be seen trying to separate the combatants in the emergency area of the hospital several times. Each time they were taken outside the department, but each time the individual would break free of a guard and run back into the emergency area to rejoin the brawl. The assailants used equipment in the department, including a wheelchair and a dustbin, as weapons during the brawl. A patient in pampers and bandages was attacked and bleeding after the incident, although it is believed some of his injuries were sustained prior to the incident. The video ended with the incident still ongoing.

Investigating officers were told that a team of police officers in a marked police vehicle were called in by hospital officials but when they responded, they left shortly after they were allegedly told that some of the people involved in the brawl were connected to a senior police officer.

Police are calling on eyewitnesses to come forward and assist in their investigations.
