One Young World Caucas 2018

Tuesday, September 4, 2018

One Young World was founded in 2009 by David Jones and Kate Robertson. They're a UK-based charity that gathers the brightest young leaders from around the world. They use this platform to encourage young people to make lasting connections to create a chain of positive change around the world.

Every year, the organization hosts its annual summit around the world that houses the likes of many well know guest speakers. They gather the most innovative thinkers from secondary and tertiary schools, global and national companies, as well a Non-government organizations and world leaders that act as One Young World Counselors. After each summit, these delegates go out on their own initiatives or lend their power to initiatives already in existence.

At this year's summit, the Health and Education segment enlightened the young leaders about many controversial topics that may have been at the foresight of the minds of the young delegates. The first speaker was Miss Nazmah Muller, Founder of the Caribbean Collective for Justice and the CARICOM Herb Farmer's union.

She began her lecture with a powerful message, a message that she was given by the late Fidel Castro on their meeting in 2003. She asked if he had a message that she could relay to youth of the world today and what he told her was simple, “the future is ours.” She informed that she never though she'd be able to relay this message and that it is a very emotional time and she now has the platform to do so.

Her lecture focused heavily on the fact that cannabis has now opened up a new world for the health and medical community worldwide. She stated, “Imagine a world where medicine can be grown,” the pharmaceutical industry is booming and the products on the market all come with a list of terrible side effects. The main issue of today's society is that lifestyle diseases are taking over, and cannabis can be the way to help.

Urging the young adults to wait until reaching the age of 21 to try this new was of alternative medicine, she closed her lecture with a powerful message, “the way you feel right now, hold on to it. It's going to guide you through life and may be the only reason you get up in the morning.”

The second speaker of the afternoon was Mr. Duane Lal the founder of Novel Sports Limited in Trinidad and Tobago. He opened the session with an interactive game to help the young audience with mental alertness. The game was engaging and fun and set a positive tone for the evening session. His lecture focused on sport as it relates to health and wellness, he urged the audience to think of sport as more than just playing a game. “Sport is 90 percent mind and 20 percent skill,” he stated, “sport is played for a purpose and is an activity that triggers the mind to respond to movements in your body.”

He also highlighted the prevalence of mental health issues as it relates to physical health and wellness. He asked the crowd a simple question, “How do we train our minds? We exercise it.” To achieve physical health and wellness you must be of sounds mind and body to see any type of results. He urges the youth of Trinidad and Tobago to find solutions to the different problems that are currently plaguing the health of our youth. He asked them to do something very simple, “Put forward a plan!”
