Square pegs in govt utilities

Wednesday, May 30, 2018

On May 25, 2018, while travelling on a PTSC bus from City Gate to West Mall on the Chaguaramas/ Carenage bus, which probably left City Gate late at 6.30 am as the buses don’t run on time—it’s hard to tell if it’s the 6 am or 6.30 am bus.

The digital notice boards don’t update regularly with accurate information and the information desk can’t give accurate information on where or when the next bus is either arriving or departing. All of the buses, as it should be in the 21st century, should have GPS so citizens and commuters using the service will know whether to wait or seek alternative transportation.

The driver that morning was one of those PTSC and government workers who has become so comfortable and lackadaisical about his job, that he feels he can do whatever he wants by driving the bus like his own private maxi taxi. He was as usual making several stops along the route that are not sanctioned by PTSC to accommodate his friends and family at every corner. If PTSC continues to operate like this it will crash soon.

The Government can’t tax its way out of the economic mess T&T is in but if they run a proper service that runs on time, as our citizens often say about North America and the UK, then it will be profitable because more citizens would use its service. As is, all it’s really doing is providing “eat-ah-food” employment to lackadaisical workers.

PTSC, please monitor the buses and drivers with GPS and cameras to provide a better service otherwise all the money spent on buses is just citizens’ money wasted. Wake up, T&T.
