Only seeking what they can get

Friday, April 27, 2018

I and many of our era of the 1950’s, and grew up in Belmont hearing pan on the streets for many celebrations, Christmas, Easter, Colts Football Club winning the FA or BVD cups. Bands like Casablanca, Sunland, Syncopaters, Renegades and Dem Fortunates. Steel bands badjons were Baround, Pink Eye, Byer Brothers, Gold Teeth, Little Axe, Whity Kinkade etc.

These names were recognised in the community as pan men and protectors of their neighbourhood. Were these pan men of the past lovers of pan that is questionable for in battle they destroyed the enemy’s instruments, sometimes even their own which is the pan.

Those words the “Love for Pan” has transcended to the present pan leaders, which is the Pan Trinbago organisation, elected to protect and promote the interest of the pan and the pan man. The cry among today’s pan players is that the executive of Pan Trinbago seeks their own personnel interests financially and they are getting poor representation from that organisation. They also complain of poor managerial skills within the organisation.

What we are seeing today is the present executive and this caring body, lovers of pan, are refusing to leave their gracious seats in Pan Trinbago, although being asked to vacate their elected post by the membership. The view of many is that those of the present Pan Trinbago body are not lovers of pan, but benefactors of pan. Prove me wrong.
