Superwoman flies into Trinidad concert

Thursday, October 15, 2015
Canadian YouTube sensation Lilly “Superwoman” Singh has a large following among T&T’s teenagers.

An ambitious young brother/sister promotion team is sending teenagers across the country into a frenzy over the upcoming Superwoman concert.

Sareeta Bridgelal, 32 and her brother Randir own and operate Wunderlust Productions and on October 17, they will bring YouTube sensation Lilly Singh, better known as Superwoman, to perform at the Centre of Excellence in Macoya.

Described as “the Tina Fey of Punjabis” in one article, Canadian Singh has an immense following of teens and young adults worldwide, with over six million subscribers to her YouTube channel.

Her videos, which are mostly comedy with some motivational speaking, have been viewed close to a billion times.

So there is no surprise that T&T youngsters are extremely excited about her impending visit. Many waited for hours in line for tickets that sold out within 40 minutes at each of the three outlets and the e-ticket website crashed several times because of the volume of requests.

In an interview with the T&T Guardian, Sareeta said despite being fans of Superwoman themselves, she and her brother never expected the response they have been getting from fans.

“Nobody expected that kind of response, there were about 12,000 people trying to log in to the online ticket site the first time,” Sareeta said. “This is our first major show and we were blown away by the response.”

She said for most event promoters, ticket sales usually trickle in and start to heat up immediately before the event takes place.

“According our original plan, we were supposed to do two shows, catering for about 800 people in each one. Now, we are doing one show only and we have already sold 2,500 tickets, we are just awaiting approval to sell more.”

Sareeta said Singh has agreed to do a meet and greet session with fans following her performance.

“She requested that only 200 meet and greet tickets be sold though, as she does not want to be overwhelmed by fans at the event.”

The concert will run for 90 minutes, during which Singh and her 14-member dance entourage will perform. Then, there is another 90 minutes allocated for the meet and greet.

Speaking about an incident at Gulf City Mall just over a week ago when police were called in to control rowdy fans during ticket sales, Sareeta said, “We announced tickets would be there for a certain time, people were waiting from 12 o’clock in the day and we got into the location but it is a small store. Then a lot of people were cutting in the lines and there was some uproar over this, but there were not any fights.”

Asked how Wunderlust plans to handle over-enthusiastic fans on the night of the concert, Sareeta said extra security measures have been put into place.

“We are hiring a lot of security and there will be ushers taking fans to their seats, we are trying our best to ensure the security of all Lilly’s fans.”

With the show just a few days away, Sareeta is warning fans against falling prey to scalpers.

“We have tried our best to regulate tickets, but there are many unscrupulous people, who are not only trying to sell tickets, but Lilly’s official merchandise as well.

“We are advising people to buy from her website but not from these people, as there is no way to guarantee you are getting official merchandise.”

Sareeta said there would also be merchandise on sale at the event.

Tickets for the show range from $380 for meet and greet, $300 for VIP and $240 for general admission.
