Fuego Caribeno wins Parang on De Hill
For the third consecutive year, Fuego Caribeno has been declared Parang on De Hill champions.
The band from Vistabella, led by David Winchester, beat 11 other bands—including first and second place National Parang Champions, Los Alumnos De San Juan and Los Amigos Cantadores—to walk away with a first prize of $30,000 sponsored by Kaizen Environmental Services Trinidad Ltd.
Fuego Caribeno performed two original tunes, El Annuncio and Ya Nacio, composed by band member Irvys Juarez, in the keenly contested competition held on the San Fernando Hill on Sunday night. The competition, organised by a group of businessmen involved in the energy sector, called Citizens in Service of San Fernando (CISS), saw a tie for second place between Los Pastores of Palo Seco and Los Buenos Parranderos of El Dorado. These bands shared the cash prize of $20,000 sponsored by Tucker Energy Services and $15,000 courtesy Process Management Ltd.
Los Alumnos De San Juan placed fourth, while Los Amigos Cantadores, of Trincity place, fifth. Salsa Picante, of St Joseph Village, San Fernando, copped the special prize for best marac player, while Los Pastores and Los Maestros De Musica shared the special award for best mandolin players. CISS vice chairman Jude Legendre, said they were working with the mayor of San Fernando Marlene Coudray to use the funds from this venture to assist several deserving charities.
