Clean and green
Today, with the rainy season officially in progress, many citizens will be participating in that wonderful Corpus Christi tradition of planting.
It is one of the most natural and effective ways to enhance the natural environment across this country, adding to the green spaces, beautifying and contributing to cleaner, healthier surroundings.
This is a perfect opportunity for citizens to consider other ways to improve T&T’s environment, not only by planting but also cleaning up the surroundings.
While planting the kitchen garden, which is a good way to contribute to eating local and reducing the high food import bill, make sure that the environs are cleared of rubbish, especially carelessly discarded receptacles that can get filled with stagnant water and become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Where space allows for the cultivation of flower beds and even trees, make sure there are no unsightly accumulations of items that can become eyesores. Mind you, not everything needs to be carted off to the dumpster. Think of creative ways to re-purpose items rather than adding them to the country’s already overflowing landfills.
In the quest for a greener, cleaner T&T, Guardian Media is embarking on a recycling project involving the item that constitutes the bulk of the raw material, as well as the waste, from our daily production cycle.
We encourage your support for recycling of old newspapers, a good way to contribute to the environmental health of this nation.
Uber drives away
Understandably, there have been mixed reactions to the departure of Uber from this country. Many saw it as a convenient and safe mode of transportation, given the unpredictability and inefficiency of public transportation.
However, one must also remember that the framework does not exist for Uber to operate legally in this country and, unfortunately, the necessary hurdles were not cleared before the service launched here early last year. One benefit of Uber is that the brief presence of that service proved that there is the capacity for a reliable transportation system in this country.
Maybe one of T&T’s innovators can come up with a legal, web-based alternative that can work here.
Prove them wrong
Here is a thumbs up in advance to all the citizens who will prove the naysayers wrong and not try to make this two-day mid-week holiday into an extra long weekend off.
The country’s economic health and prosperity requires that workers report for duty tomorrow, demonstrating that this can be a productive nation.
Live up to the national watchwords—discipline, production, tolerance.
