Ashok Singhal is at this time the most influential Hindu in the world. This 88-year-old has remained unwed and has committed his whole life to the propagation and protection of Hinduism, not only in India, but throughout the world. Ashok has visited T&T on numerous occasions, the last time being in August 2012. On that occasion the Maha Sabha hosted a number of religious ceremonies in his honour.
At a special reception held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Port-of-Spain, Singhal was moved by the accolades showered upon him by the dozens of Trinidad pundits and Hindu devotees holding important positions in the country. Shri Ashok Singhal was born on September 28, 1926, in the city of Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. In December 2011, the veteran Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader was replaced as the international president of the organisation, while its general secretary Pravin Togadia was given greater responsibility.
The VHP board of trustees at their three-day meeting appointed Raghav Reddy and Togadia as the new international president and international working president respectively. Champat Rai of Delhi was made international general secretary, Ashok Chowgule of Mumbai was chosen as working president (VHP External) while Dinesh Chandra of Delhi was appointed the organisational general secretary.
