According to the Internet, I am doomed to be a failure. That message and the CAPE and CXC results that students collected last week have inspired today’s thoughts. Let me start with the Internet. I was puzzled when I recently read an Internet story that emphatically stated one of the worst degrees any student could have is anthropology. It was right up there with philosophy as a useless degree. The story found no merit in how an anthropologist studies culture, language, ancient civilisations or evolution and biology in the form of cultural anthropology, archaeology, anthropological linguistics and physical anthropology.

This article claimed that anthropology is a useless degree that will carry graduates in this discipline nowhere but the unemployment line.  Needless to say, I was shocked because I am first and foremost an anthropologist. It was my first degree, and I truly believe that anthropology got me every single job in my life. All right…let me leave that thought for a minute and jump to CXC and CAPE results, which will most likely determine the direction most students will take when they consider university and a future career choice.
